His time has come…

logansun

Set in 2029, with mutants reaching almost X-tinction, 3 lone rangers are eeking out their survival somewhere near El Paso. A degenerate Prof X (Patrick Stewart), the light fearing Caliban (Stephen Merchant) and a washed out, weary driver, drinking himself to death, Logan (huh??).

As always, mega corporates are trying to rule and ruin the world. In one of such projects, X-23, comes a girl Laura (Dafne Keen), who is being kept in Logan’s custody to be escorted safely to North Dakota. Thus begins the cat and mouse chase between the bad guys with all the resources and our protagonists, in a race against time, literally.

Director James Mangold definitely has got his heart and mind in the right place while making this instalment of the franchisee.

Just like First Class & Days of Future Past were the best in the X-Men series, more human than just FX, comes Logan. Undoubtedly it is the most human film in the entire series of 9 films, which in the past 17 years have become a part of our lives. The action is more real, gritty and definitely more blood curdling than any slasher film, forget the franchisee. It is this lack of CGI in the events on screen, which makes the film more relatable.

Logan a.k.a. Wolverine, is old, tired and disillusioned. The same metal that made him the ultimate killing machine is now killing him and he is waiting for his time to come.

Patrick Stewart shows his brilliance, apparently losing around 20lbs for the role. His childlike enthusiasm towards Laura and paternal worries towards Logan, along with the pride during the dinner scene, at once running a school for the gifted, exceptional.

Boyd Holbrook makes for a perfect foil to Logan’s existence and does good as the antagonist. So is Stephen Merchant in his role, the perfect antibody to the X Men. He is almost 6 inches taller than Logan and dwarfs Laura and Xavier, yet is the most timid and scared of the lot.

Dafne Keen makes an excellent debut and is a treat to watch. Her innocence and anger is epitomised in the scene when she walks out of the factory, with the severed head in her hand of her victim. Mangold does a good job in capturing her tender moments with Logan, which are primarily one sided.

Hugh Jackman gives Logan a.k.a. Wolverine a befitting farewell. His fatigue, over centuries of bloodshed, finally catching up, but still not one to give up without a fight, if pushed. For a man, who has played a single superhero character for the longest time in the past 2 decades, one can count the changes in Super/Spidey/Bat/Hulk in the same time frame, and then realise the power of the actor and the star in this franchisee. Even in movies like First Class, he steals the show with his ‘Go F.. yourself’.

I don’t know what career choices will Jackman make post this, but he will always be remembered as the Wolverine, not only due to his persona, but due to the sincerity in each part, the epitome of which we see in his Logan.
